Dolphin Care UK and the Sea Watch Foundation.
Please join us and help us with observations.
Dolphin Care UK are very proud of all our volunteer observer's who report their sightings of cetaceans around the UK, We would now like to introduce you to an amazing organisation who does quite important work much like our own.
This organisation is The Sea Watch Foundation.
The Sea Watch Foundation was founded as a charity and a limited company in 1991 by Dr Peter Evans, in association with Paul Vodden (who for several years had been involved in animal welfare and conservation, working for the RSPCA, Greenpeace and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society).
Today, Sea Watch is staffed by eight persons, based in Oxford and in their Welsh office in New Quay. However, the work could not be completed without the help of numerous hard working volunteers much like DCUK the SWF have volunteer observers all around the UK coastline, dedicated to recording and reporting all sightings of whales, dolphins and porpoises.
If you live near or work on the coast or at sea, then you can help the Sea Watch Foundation with its valuable work.
They have forms you can dowload and fill in, available on their website there is a link to this at the bottom of this page.
As many of you who visit DCUK website and fill out the sightings form on our home page, we would still like you to carry on doing this for us.
Sea Watch's work aims to protect and conserve the UK's whales, dolphins and porpoises populations very much the same as we do here at DCUK.
Sea Watch scientists regularly monitor and study whale and dolphin activity, gaining knowledge and understanding their status, numbers and distribution as well as the condition of their marine habitat. This enables Sea Watch to raise awareness of any problems and prompt environmental change to help protect them from existing and impending threats.
Sea Watch is a national marine environmental research charity working to improve the conservation of whales and dolphins in the seas around Britain and Ireland.
Their aims are to:
* Involve the public in scientific monitoring
* Raise awareness and understanding of marine mammals and the threats they face
* Educate, inform and advise for better environmental protection
By monitoring the numbers and locations of whales and dolphins they can gain valuable knowledge of the health of our marine environment and insight into the effects of chemical pollution, noise disturbance, over-fishing, accidental capture in fishing gear, and climate change.
Sea Watch can help you find out about:
* The marine mammal species that live in the seas around the British Isles
* Where and how to look for them
* Activities and research programmes
* How you can team up with scientists to improve your knowledge and help conserve them
